QuantCouncil: A-share multi-agent research and paper-trading platform (LangGraph, MCP, RAG, FastAPI, React)
Overview
QuantCouncil turns the TradingAgents multi-agent framework into a full research platform for China A-shares and US stocks. Analyst agents study a stock in parallel, bull and bear researchers debate, a trader and a risk committee refine the plan, and a portfolio manager decides. From there, deterministic code takes over: a risk gate sizes and vets the order against the market's rules and your holdings, you place the trade at your own broker and confirm what was filled, and a hash-chained ledger books it.
- Two markets: A-shares on AKShare / BaoStock with source fallback, point-in-time statements (by publication date), Dragon-Tiger list, margin balances and market breadth; US stocks on yfinance and SEC EDGAR. Each market has its own holdings account, currency, benchmark and trading calendar.
- MCP server: 14 market-data tools, research search and Agent Skills, usable from the agents or any MCP client.
- Your real holdings: enter your positions and cash, and the agents decide around them. QuantCouncil never places orders: after trading at your broker you record the actual price and quantity, or mark the trade as not executed, and your holdings update.
- Human in the loop: every run pauses with LangGraph
interruptbefore an order; runs are checkpointed and resume on any worker, or after the desktop app restarts. - Rules in code: A-share lots, T+1, price limits and ST, plus position, exposure, cash and drawdown limits in both markets, are enforced by the risk engine, not by prompts.
- Research RAG: announcements and broker reports with hybrid retrieval (pgvector + jieba full-text, RRF, cross-encoder rerank) and citations.
- One-click reports: export a daily report or a full research report as PDF or Word.
- Bring your own model: switch between DeepSeek, OpenAI and Claude in the UI, tune debate depth and sampling; keys are encrypted at rest.
- Observability: live SSE streaming of every agent, Langfuse tracing, LLM-as-judge evaluation and a retrieval benchmark.
- Desktop app: a Windows installer that runs the whole platform in one process on SQLite, with no Docker.

Quick start
Requirements: Docker, and an API key for DeepSeek, OpenAI or Anthropic.
git clone https://github.com/Erikdai/quantcouncil.git && cd quantcouncil
cp .env.example .env # optional: set a key here, or later in the Settings page
docker compose up -d --build # web UI on http://localhost:8080, API docs on http://localhost:8000/docs
Optional tracing: docker compose --profile observability up -d starts Langfuse on http://localhost:3000; set LANGFUSE_PUBLIC_KEY, LANGFUSE_SECRET_KEY and LANGFUSE_HOST in .env.
Desktop app (Windows)
A single-user build that needs no Docker, Postgres or Redis. It runs the same agents and UI in one process, keeps its data in SQLite under %LOCALAPPDATA%\QuantCouncil, and opens in its own window (Microsoft Edge WebView2, built into Windows 11). The window sizes itself to each monitor, including high-DPI laptop screens. The server deployment above is unchanged.
uv venv && uv pip install -e ".[desktop]" pyinstaller
.\deploy\desktop\build.ps1 # needs Node.js and Inno Setup 6; writes build\desktop\QuantCouncil-Setup-<version>.exe
python -m quantcouncil.desktop # or run it from source, without packaging
API keys go in Settings, or in a .env file in the data folder. Market data and the model APIs still need an internet connection, and the first analysis downloads the embedding model (about 90 MB).
Local development
docker compose up -d postgres redis
uv venv && uv pip install -e ".[platform-dev]"
alembic upgrade head
python -m quantcouncil.mcp_server --transport streamable-http --port 8001
taskiq worker quantcouncil.worker.broker:broker quantcouncil.worker.tasks
uvicorn quantcouncil.api.main:app --reload
cd frontend && npm install && npm run dev # http://localhost:5173
Use the MCP server from Claude Desktop or Cursor
{ "mcpServers": { "cn-market": { "command": "python", "args": ["-m", "quantcouncil.mcp_server"] } } }
Tests and evaluation
pytest # unit tests, offline
pytest -m integration tests/quantcouncil # needs Postgres and Redis
python -m quantcouncil.evals judge --recent 5
python -m quantcouncil.evals rag --dataset path/to/queries.jsonl
Project structure
quantcouncil/ platform: graph, risk, portfolio, rag, memory, mcp_server, api, worker, evals, desktop

Disclaimer
QuantCouncil is a research project. It never places orders, and nothing it produces is investment advice.
