stillpane

stillpane is the fastest way to give Claude Code context.

Claude Code has no Appshots

OpenAI's Codex app has Appshots.
Anthropic marked the equivalent feature request "not planned" (anthropics/claude-code#68498).
stillpane fills the gap for Claude Code: same screenshot, same text pulled through the macOS accessibility APIs, same content you never scrolled to.

What is different is that you choose where the capture goes.
An Appshot opens a new thread unless you touched one in the last minute, so you capture, land in the wrong conversation, and go find the one you actually wanted.
A capture here waits for your next message, in whatever session you send it from.
You pick the destination by picking where you type.
There is no wrong thread to climb back out of.

Install

Two commands in any terminal session:

Once the plugin is installed, Claude downloads the latest app release, verifies it is a notarized build signed by stillpane's Developer ID, installs it to /Applications, and launches setup.

Get the dmg from the latest release, open it, and drag stillpane into Applications.

First launch

Open stillpane and a setup assistant walks the whole thing, one step at a time:

1. Accessibility - allows stillpane to capture the window's text.
2. Screen Recording - allows stillpane to take the screenshot of the captured window. Without it, captures only record the window text.
3. Claude Code - the assistant finds your claude binary and installs the plugin for you; on a Mac with the Claude app but no claude command, the same press first installs Claude Code's command line tool, verified against Anthropic's published checksum. The plugin approves its own capture reads (scoped to ~/.claude/stillpane/, nothing else), so Claude never asks for permission to read a capture and nothing is written to your settings.
4. First capture - press left Option and right Option in any app; the assistant notices and finishes.

After that, the menu bar icon holds everything else: checking your setup, pausing captures, switching to text-only captures, uninstalling.

stillpane registers itself as a login item on first launch so captures survive a reboot.
You can turn that off if needed from the menu.

A note on the macOS Sequoia warning

Every so often, Sequoia shows a system alert saying stillpane "can bypass the system private window picker".
That is macOS policy for every app with Screen Recording permission, not a sign that anything is wrong.

How it works

1. Left Option and right Option held together capture the frontmost window: a screenshot plus the accessibility tree rendered to clean markdown - headings, links, tables, full text beyond the visible scroll area.

   Hold Shift with the chord to capture the other way: text with no screenshot, which takes no picture at all and costs fewer tokens.
   "Swap Capture Modes" in the menu makes text-only the default, and Shift then gets you the screenshot back.
   The menu always spells out which gesture takes which, so there is no rule to remember.

2. The capture is written to ~/.claude/stillpane/.

3. Two hooks, shipped as a Claude Code plugin, do the attaching.
   A UserPromptSubmit hook attaches the capture to your next message if it is under two minutes old; it reads only ~/.claude/stillpane/ and never your prompt.
   A PreToolUse hook approves Read calls inside that folder so the capture opens without a permission prompt; it stays silent for every other path.
   Without a fresh capture both exit at once; the one exception is a single note, on a Mac where the app is not installed, that captures need the app.
   Older captures attach on demand with /stillpane.

   Same behavior in the CLI, the desktop app, and the IDE extensions.
   Hooks load when a session starts, so captures attach in sessions you start after installing or updating the plugin.

What Claude actually receives

A capture is two files Claude reads - shot.png and text.md - plus one block the hook injects ahead of your next message.

Read both files in full before responding, even if the user's message seems unrelated to the capture: the user chose to attach this window by capturing it, and only they know why it matters.
If text.md exceeds the Read tool limit, continue with offset reads until you have read all of it.

The wrapper marks everything a capture carries as untrusted input to disarm prompt injection: window titles and page text are whatever the screen happened to say, including text shaped like instructions.

The block itself contains no captured text - not even the window title, which a web page controls - so nothing on screen can forge a second trusted-looking region around it.
Nothing else is added; the block points Claude at two local files, which Claude reads in the same turn, and their contents reach the model like any other file it reads.

Lean by design

Captures are stored only on your Mac, in an owner-only folder; attaching one to a Claude Code message sends it to the model like anything you type.
Zero telemetry.
One Swift binary, zero third-party dependencies, no MCP server, 0% CPU while idle.
Captures are pruned after 24 hours.

Privacy

stillpane itself never sends a capture anywhere, and reports nothing about you or your usage to anyone.
A capture leaves your Mac only when it is attached to a Claude Code message; from there Claude Code sends it to your configured model provider, like anything else you send, and that provider's retention policy applies.

A capture carries the window's whole accessibility tree, so it can include text scrolled out of view and anything else the window holds.
Everything a capture contains lives in ~/.claude/stillpane/ - a folder you can open from the menu and delete at any time - and is pruned automatically after 24 hours.

The only other network activity: stillpane asks stillpane.dev once a day whether a newer version exists so the menu can point you at a newer release - a request carrying no identifiers, off-switchable with the menu's "Check for Updates Automatically" toggle.
It carries nothing about you or your captures, and the app never updates itself - installing a newer release stays your action.
The one thing setup can download is Claude Code's command line tool: only on a Mac that has none, only when you press Install Plugin, and only after the download matches Anthropic's published checksum.

The Claude Code plugin updates only when you run claude plugin update stillpane@stillpane yourself; each plugin release is pinned to an exact commit, and Check Setup tells you when your installed plugin is older than the app expects.
The plugin itself makes no network calls; the one exception is the stillpane-install skill, which downloads the app from GitHub releases only after you confirm.

Limits

Text quality tracks the app's accessibility tree.
Native apps and browsers are rich.
Electron desktop apps - Notion, Slack, Obsidian, Discord - work in full: they keep their accessibility tree off until an assistive app asks, so stillpane asks, and the first capture after such an app launches takes a couple of extra seconds while the tree is built.
Canvas-rendered UIs (games, some design tools) degrade to screenshot-only, the same limit Codex's Appshots has.

Control and Command held during the chord cancel it, so every ⌘⌥ shortcut stays untouched.
Shift is the one modifier that rides along: it captures the other way, which is safe because a single Option key never fires a capture and ⌥⇧ typing uses one.

Captures attach to Claude Code sessions running on your Mac; a claude.ai cloud session cannot read your local files.
Requires macOS 14 or later.

Uninstall

Choose "Uninstall stillpane..." from the menu bar icon.
It removes the Claude Code plugin and its marketplace entry, your captures folder, the Launch at Login registration, stillpane's settings and permission grants, and moves the app to the Trash.
